| How does a hairdresser determine their price? |
| If you’ve ever had to search for a hairdresser, one thing that becomes abundantly clear is that their rates can be all over the map. Suzanne, who works for a prominent full-scale beauty salon, charges upward of $300 for a simple haircut and highlight. However, Bob, the owner of a corner-store barbershop, can fit you in for a light-on-the-wallet $75 for what is purported to be the exact same service. So, how does a hairdresser determine his or her rates? |
|
Salon location |
| Rates for a hairdresser in New York City or Los Angles will generally be higher than the rates for a hairdresser in Paragould, Arkansas, for example. In two of the aforementioned cities, the standard of living is higher than in other areas of the country, thus the products and services will generally be more expensive in these areas.
|
| When you’re considering location, you also have to consider the hairdresser that offers styles and cuts out of their home versus a hairdresser that work at a dedicated place of business. Hair stylists that work out of their home can oftentimes charge less for a session simply because their overhead is likely lower. However, if the hairdresser is a specialist, in those cases you may find that a work-at-home stylist charges more than the local barbershop or salon. |
| Independent vs. Employee |
| If a hairdresser is an employee, meaning that they receive paychecks from the salon or beauty shop that they work for, the company oftentimes determines their rates. On the other hand, if a salon hires a hairdresser as an independent contractor, the stylist pays “rent” to the salon for the use of the chair, and independent hairdressers oftentimes have a lot of freedom regarding the amount that they can charge for a haircut, highlight, or any other hair beautification service.
|
| Experience or training as a hairdresser |
| Oftentimes you will find that new hairstylists will charge less than more experienced hairdressers. While this is not always the case, this is especially true with independent stylists. |
| A hairdresser’s rates are dependent on a number of factors: whom they work for, how long they have been practicing the skill, where they are working from, and the geographic region where they are offering their hair styling services. Higher pricing does not necessarily mean a better quality cut just as lower priced hairstyling services does not necessarily mean you will receive an inferior service.
|
| While pricing for a hairdresser can be all over the board, the most important thing to consider when you are searching for a hairdresser is this: does their style work for you.
